WWE Capitol Punishment
Capitol Punishment was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE, which took place on June 19, 2011 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.[3][4]
Background
Capitol Punishment featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that were played out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed heroes or villains as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a match or a series of matches.[5]
The predominant feud on the card was between John Cena and R-Truth for Cena's WWE Championship. The crazed R-Truth started to set his sights on the WWE Championship and John Cena after Truth realized that there was a "conspiracy" against him in the WWE. Truth started to attack merchandise stands featuring John Cena merch, and then he even turned his attention to the fans in attendance at arenas. Truth labeled the fans "Little Jimmys" and "Little Jennys", and they were just as big a part of the conspiracy as the people in the WWE. Truth attacked fans, and managed to trick John Cena into getting counted-out when the two had a match. This put Truth in contention for the WWE Championship yet again. As the weeks to the pay-per-view drew closer, Truth was nearly put into a match with John Morrison by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin on the All-Star RAW episode, but Truth attacked Morrison backstage, re-injuring Morrison's neck.
The second most predominant feud on the card was between former World Heavyweight Champion Christian and current World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Christian felt as though he deserved another shot at Randy Orton's title due to poor officiating at the Over the Limit pay-per-view. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long didn't grant Christian his title match, but he placed Christian in a match as the Special Guest Referee between Sheamus and Orton. During the course of the match, Christian refused to count "three" against Orton while Sheamus had his shoulders pinned to the match. This angered Sheamus, but also let Orton connect with an RKO on Sheamus, and Christian counted the three to give Orton the victory. When the match was over, Christian hit Randy in the face with the World Heavyweight Championship instead of giving him the belt. Christian then managed to taunt and mock Orton to the point that Orton agreed to another World Heavyweight Championship bout at Capitol Punishment. Sheamus was going to be added to the match after winning a No Disqualification Match against Orton on SmackDown, thanks to interference from Christian. The match was Sheamus vs. Christian, but Christian won the match. Afterwards, Randy Orton stormed the ring, but Christian escaped. Randy then settled on kicking Sheamus in the head, putting him out of action indefinitely.
Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger led a mini-feud leading up to Capitol Punishment. Bourne and Swagger exchanged a series of wins and losses. But a more important feud on the card was between CM Punk and Rey Mysterio. Punk and Mysterio similarly exchanged a series of wins and losses like Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger did, but Punk and Mysterio were reigniting a feud dating back to WrestleMania XXVI. Punk enlisted the aid of his New Nexus cronies to help him win against Rey, but they were to be banned from ringside at the pay-per-view.
Ezekial Jackson started to grow apart from The Corre, and wanted to pursue a singles career away from the group. Wade Barrett, Heath Slater, and Justin Gabriel didn't take kindly to Jackson's new aspirations, and promptly beat him down backstage. Jackson was given multiple opportunities at Wade Barrett's Intercontinental Championship, but each time he got Wade in the Torture Rack, his signature submission maneuver, Heath and Justin would run down and attack Jackson. This would make Jackson win the match by DQ, but titles can't change hands by disqualification. During a six-man tag team match against The Usos and Ezekial Jackson on SmackDown, Wade abandoned Heath and Justin. He claimed he was preserving his own interests since he had a title match at Capitol Punishment against Zeke, but Justin and Heath were angered by his actions. Justin and Heath then announced to Wade that The Corre was no more and he could defend his title on Sunday without their help, effectively dissolving the group.
Big Show sat on Alberto Del Rio's luxury car, which angered Del Rio. When they lost the WWE Tag Team Championships to The New Nexus, Alberto Del Rio mocked The Big Show and Kane backstage during an interview segment. Del Rio even slapped Big Show across the face. Big Show then chased Del Rio into the parking lot, but Del Rio's personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez accidentally ran Big Show over with his car. This injured Big Show's leg and left Kane without a partner. Del Rio and Ricardo then made fun of Big Show by having Ricardo dress like him, mocking Big Show's weight. Big Show then ran down to the ring and beat Ricardo to a pulp, putting him in the hospital and leaving Del Rio without his ring announcer. Kane had to pull Show away to keep him from killing Ricardo. Despite his injury, Show still wanted a match against Del Rio, and was granted one at the pay-per-view.
The Miz blamed his former protege Alex Riley for him not regaining the WWE Championship from John Cena at Over the Limit. Miz fired Riley live on Raw and then demeaned him in front of the world. Riley responded violently, attacking Miz. Riley and Miz battled each other over the next few weeks, leading to a match between the two at the show. The opening match was between Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston, who were feuding over the United States Championshp after Dolph beat Kofi in a non-title match on Raw.
Event
Production
As WWE's 2011 June pay-per-view event, WWE Capitol Punishment replaced the 2010 WWE Fatal 4-Way themed event. Promotion towards this event was centered around the setting for the PPV, that being the United States capital, Washington, D.C. This promotion, however, wasn't all praised. WWE produced a video to promote the event using actual press footage of President Barack Obama spliced and edited with footage that WWE recorded using actors. The video is intended to show Obama answering questions about Capitol Punishment in a press conference.[6] First airing on May 22 at Over the Limit, WWE received criticism for the video. To avoid legal complications with the U.S. government, WWE added a disclaimer at the start of the video for future airings. This included spelling out their acronym as "World Wrestling Entertainment", a name they ceased using earlier in the year.[7]
The parody of a White House Presidential press conference is intended to publicize WWE's (World Wrestling Entertainment) pay-per-view television event known as Capitol Punishment, which emanates from our Nation's Capital on Sunday, June 19.

The promotional poster for the event also featured the President, where Obama is acting as a referee in a confrontation between WWE Superstars John Cena and Rey Mysterio. WWE released a similar disclaimer for the artwork as they did for the video.[8] The event featured an appearance by U.S. President Barack Obama impersonator Reggie Brown.[9]

Extreme Rules (2011)
Extreme Rules was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE, which took place on May 1, 2011 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida. It was the third Extreme Rules event.[2][3]
The event received 200,000 pay-per-view buys, up slightly from last year's event of 182,000.
Background
Extreme Rules featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing feuds, plots, and storylines which were played out on WWE's primary television programs. Wrestlers portrayed villains or heroes as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.[4]
Edge was originally scheduled to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio in a ladder match. However, Edge announced that he is forced to retire on the April 11th episode of Raw due to being diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis stemming from his neck injury. Edge vacated the World Heavyweight Championship on the April 15th episode of Smackdown and the match was cancelled. It was later announced the winner of a 20-man battle royal would face Alberto in the ladder match; Edge's best friend in both the storyline and real life, Christian, won the right to face Del Rio for the title. In the interim, Del Rio was drafted to Raw in the 2011 WWE Draft.
On the April 11th edition of Monday Night Raw there was a 5-man gauntlet match which would decide the number one contender to face The Miz for the WWE Championship. This match featured John Cena, Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth and Dolph Ziggler. The last two men in the final round were John Cena and R-Truth. After an interference from The Miz and Alex Riley the match was resulted in a double disqualification, which would then lead to the anonymous Raw general manager stating that both John Cena and R-Truth would compete for the WWE Championship against The Miz in a Triple Threat match. On the April 18 edition of Raw, John Morrison challenged R-Truth for Truth's spot in the match and won the opportunity, but Truth turned heel and attacked Morrison after the match. Later in the night, it was revealed that the match would be contested inside a steel cage.
An ongoing feud involves Raw commentators Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler. At WrestleMania XXVII, Lawler made Cole submit to the ankle lock, but the anonymous Raw General Manager reversed special guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin's decision, thus making Cole the winner via disqualification. On the April 11 episode of Raw, Lawler defeated Cole's trainer, Jack Swagger, allowing him to announce that he would team up with his former broadcast partner, Jim Ross, to face Cole and Swagger at Extreme Rules. Two weeks later, the Raw General Manager declared that the teams would face each other in a Country Whipping match.
Another feud from the SmackDown brand is between Layla and Michelle McCool, formerly known together as LayCool. Dissension between the two divas started on the April 8 edition of SmackDown when McCool refused to tag Layla in a tag team match against Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly. Also, tension grew since they failed to get back the WWE Divas Championship several times and lost a six person tag-team match in WrestleMania XXVII against Trish Stratus, John Morrison, and Snooki from Jersey Shore. The following two weeks, the two attended couple's therapy sessions, but the latter session ended with McCool attacking Layla, solidifying their break up. During the 2011 WWE Draft, after Layla lost her match against Eve, she attacked McCool for distracting her. On the April 29 edition of SmackDown, after fighting to a double count-out in their match, Layla and McCool agreed to have a No Count-out, No Disqualification match at Extreme Rules with the loser leaving WWE.
Another feud between Raw and SmackDown is Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes. At WrestleMania XXVII, Cody Rhodes defeated Rey Mysterio by using Mysterio's knee brace, then the following Cross Rhodes. On the April 22 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Rhodes and Mysterio would have a rematch; however, Mysterio defeated Rhodes. After the match, Rhodes attacked Mysterio from behind, performed a Cross Rhodes on a concrete floor, and puts a paper bag on Mysterio. It was announced that Mysterio would face Rhodes in a Falls Count Anywhere match at Extreme Rules. At the 2011 WWE Draft, Mysterio would be drafted from SmackDown to Raw.
Two matches were added to the card during the event. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long added a bonus match between Sheamus and Kofi Kingston for the WWE United States Championship. Also a Lumberjack match featuring the WWE Tag Team Champions, Big Show and Kane against the Corre (Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson) was added.
Event
Pre-show
Before the event aired, a dark match took place. In this non-televised match, Sin Cara defeated Tyson Kidd after a moonsault side slam.
Preliminary matches
The first televised match of the night saw CM Punk taking on Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing Match. While Punk made his way to the ring with the members of The New Nexus, the anonymous Raw general manager declared that the members of The New Nexus were banned from ringside. After a back and forth match for quite some time, Punk brought in kendo sticks and the two proceeded to beat one another with them. After both men abandoned the use of the kendo sticks, Punk threw Otron into the exposed metal turnbuckle. The match then spilled to the matted area around the ring where Orton delivered a PowerSlam. At approximately ten minutes into the match, Punk executed a GTS on Orton who barely managed to answer the referee's count. The match was moved back into the ring where Punk delivered a slam to Orton on top of a chair hoping to knock the man out and win the match to no such luck. Randy retaliated by hitting Punk with the RKO, but Punk managed to answer the ref's call. After going outside of the ring again, Punk put a chair around Orton's neck and drove him into the ring post. Orton then nailed Punk with an RKO on the announce table, with Punk again managing to get to his feet before the count of ten. Punk then hit Orton with a variation of the GTS on the steel steps. Back in the ring, Punk ascended to the top rope only to be caught by Orton, who repeatedly hit him with a kendo stick. After abandoning the kendo stick, Orton managed to hit Punk with a third and final RKO from the top rope. Punk could not answer the count following the blow, and the referee declared Orton the winner.
Before the second match, in a backstage segment, the general manger of SmackDown Theodore Long informed Sheamus that he would be defending the WWE United States Championship against Kofi Kingston in a tables match. In the match, both Superstars managed to avoid hitting the tables for quite some time. Sheamus hit the Brogue Kick and Kingston nailed the Trouble in Paradise (both moves being signature moves of each wrestler), but they both managed to not go through the tables. Kingston was finally successful in winning the United States Championship after putting Sheamus through a table with a Boom Drop off the top rope, winning his second United States Championship and taking the title back to Raw.
The following match was a tag team Country Whipping match featuring Michael Cole and Jack Swagger against WWE Hall of Famers, Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross. Swagger and Cole dominated the match early on until Lawler made the hot tag to Ross. After taking Cole down, Ross locked in the AnCole lock in an attempt to make Cole tap out. However, Swagger entered the ring and pulled Ross off of Cole. Ross answered with a low blow on Swagger, but was then rolled up by Cole for the win.
The next match pitted Cody Rhodes and Rey Mysterio against one another in a Falls Count Anywhere match. The first big spot of this match was Mysterio running off the entrance ramp and executing a seated senton on Rhodes. The brawl then headed into the arena's concourse where Mysterio tackled Rhodes into a stand. After getting back inside the arena, Rhodes hip tossed Mysterio over a barricade onto the padded floor outside the ring. The finish came when Mysterio spit mist into Rhodes' face, followed by the 619 and a Springboard splash for the pin.
Main event matches
The following match was a no disqualification, no countout, Loser Leaves WWE match featuring Layla and Michelle McCool. The match started with McCool attacking Layla during her entrance routine. McCool was then able to hit the Faithbreaker, but her pin was reversed by Layla into a crucifix for the win. After the match, the debuting Kharma attacked McCool, hitting her with an Implant Buster.
The next match was for the vacant World Heayweight Championship featuring Christian and Alberto Del Rio in a ladder match. The first big spot of the match came when Christian backdropped Del Rio onto a ladder. After a back and forth match, Del Rio was able to hit an enzuigiri on Christian, knocking him off the top rope. Del Rio then attempted to free the championship, but was unsuccessful. About sixteen minutes into the match, Christian used a spear on Del Rio as a tribute to his fellow wrestler and long time friend Edge who was recently forced to retire due to a spinal injury. After Christian was about to unhook the championship, Brodus Clay ran down to ringside, preventing Christian from winning the match. Clay was busted open after taking a shot from a ladder and then thrown to the outside by Christian. After this, Del Rio applied the cross armbreaker on Christian and began scaling the ladder. However, Del Rio was distracted by a car horn coming from the retired Edge who was in a jeep. Christian took advantage of this and knocked Del Rio off the ladder onto Brodus Clay and Ricardo Rodriguez at ringside. Christian went on to unhook the World Heavyweight Championship and become the eleventh Grand Slam Champion in WWE history. Edge then celebrated in the ring with Christian to congratulate him.
The next match was for the WWE Tag Team Championship which featured Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson against Kane and Big Show in a lumberjack match. The finish came after Barrett tagged himself in once Jackson had Show down. After this, Barrett was caught by Big Show and then hit with a chokeslam for the win.
The last match of the night was a steel cage triple threat match for the WWE Championship featuring John Cena, John Morrison and The Miz. The match started with Morrison and Cena teaming up against The Miz. Cena nailed a diving bulldog on the Miz from the top rope, while Morrison tried to escape the cage, only to be stopped by Cena. As Morrison made another attempt to escape, The Miz stopped him. Cena hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle on Morrison, but The Miz nailed John Cena with the Skull Crushing Finale. The Miz tried to climb the cage but was, again, teamed up on by Morrison and Cena as they hit The Miz with a double suplex from the top of the cage. Morrison then tried a variation of the flying chuck using the cage wall instead of the ropes, aiming for Cena, but hit The Miz instead. Morrison hit a huge standing moonsault side slam on Cena, but after that was powerbombed into the steel cage wall by The Miz. Cena then applied the STF on The Miz as he tried exiting the ring by the door, but Morrison climbed the cage and shut the door, which nailed The Miz on the head. Cena then pushed Morrison who landed on the door on his groin. Back in the ring, The Miz hit a Swift DDT on Cena, and hit a running boot as well. As Morrison tried to escape the cage, both Cena and The Miz tried to stop him, but Morrison hit the Starship Pain from the top of the cage. Later in the match, Morrison was about to escape the cage to win the WWE Championship, when R-Truth came to ringside and took Morrison out with a running knee. He then took Morrison back into the ring and began repeatedly hitting him, finally ending the assault with the What's Up. Truth went on to deliver a Truth Axe on Cena before symbolically climbing over the cage. The match ended as Cena delivered a massive Attitude Adjustment on The Miz from the top rope for the pinfall victory, winning him his eighth WWE Championship (tieing the record for most WWE Title wins with Triple H) and tenth world championship overall.
Reception
Extreme Rules 2011 received extremely positive reviews. In his review for The Sun, Rob McNichol reported that the event was "a stunning return to form by WWE." CM Punk and Randy Orton's opening Last Man Standing Match was deemed a very strong opening bout which swung each way several times. CM Punk was not shamed in defeat, being made to look Orton's equal for twenty minutes. The Country Whipping match was described as "unsatisfying and slow" whilst Rey Mysterio vs Cody Rhodes was hailed as "a high quality wrestling match.... It felt fresh, and it helped that Rey certainly had his flying and bumping boots on. Also why Rhodes deserves to be in high profile matches." Kharma's debut was heralded as a special moment sorely lacking from recent WWE PPVs. The Smackdown Ladder Match between Alberto Del Rio and Christian for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship was given praise, "The crowd's genuine elation and the celebration with his [Edge] former partner and best friend made it a very special moment. Both where great and Christian's title win was something that should have happened along time ago"
"After a quick and forgettable Smackdown main event lumberjack match in which Big Show and Kane defeated Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson, the main event saw The Miz defend his title against Cena and John Morrison in a steel cage. Cena prevailed after a top rope Attitude Adjustment to win his tenth world crown." John Morrison's performance was praised as "stunning". "The high-risk moves and Starship Pain of the top of the cage proves why Morrison is a future star in WWE."
"But the story was Christian's big win and the fact that WWE used the match stipulations — so often a restricting factor on their booking — to great effect."
The Sun gave praise in some matches calling them outstanding and "Extreme", McNichol said that the event lived up to its name, the Last Man Standing match was rated 9 out of 10, the World Championship Ladder match an 9.5 out of 10 and the WWE Championship Steel Cage was rated 9 out of 10, and rated the show 9.5 out of 10 overall.
WrestleMania 27
WrestleMania XXVII was the twenty-seventh annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), held on April 3, 2011 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.[1][2][3] The event was the first WrestleMania in the state of Georgia and the second to be held in Southeastern United States, following WrestleMania XXIV.
WrestleMania XXVII was a joint-promotion event, featuring performers both from the Raw and SmackDown brands. Eight matches were featured on the event's card, which featured a supercard, a scheduling of more than one main bout. The first of these matches was a singles match match that featured Edge defeating Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. The second was a No Holds Barred match that featured The Undertaker defeating Triple H to improve his undefeated WrestleMania streak to 19–0. The third was a singles match for the WWE Championship featuring the champion, The Miz, defeating John Cena to retain the title. Featured matches on the undercard included Michael Cole versus Jerry Lawler with Steve Austin as the special guest referee, a 6-person mixed tag team match with Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Trish Stratus, and John Morrison versus Dolph Ziggler and LayCool, Randy Orton versus CM Punk, Rey Mysterio versus Cody Rhodes, and Kane, Big Show, Santino Marella, and Kofi Kingston versus Wade Barrett, Ezekiel Jackson, Justin Gabriel, and Heath Slater.
Tickets for the event commenced sale to the public on November 13, 2010.[4] According to WWE's first-quarter earnings report, WrestleMania XXVII generated approximately 1.1 million PPV buys, up roughly 30% domestically and 15% internationally from the previous year. The event grossed US$6.6 million in revenue with 71,617 in attendance, making it the second highest grossing event in WWE behind WrestleMania XXV.[5]
Background
WrestleMania featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing feuds, plots, and storylines that were played out on WWE's primary television programs. Wrestlers were portrayed as either a villain or a hero as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.[6]
The predominant rivalry for the Raw brand featured Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena and the reigning WWE Champion, The Miz. On the February 14 episode of Raw, it was announced that The Rock would serve as guest host for WrestleMania XXVII. The Rock then subsequently made his first appearance in a WWE ring in seven years, publicly mocking both Miz and Cena in his return promo.[7] At the following week's Elimination Chamber event, Cena won the Raw brand's annual Elimination Chamber match to earn himself a WWE Championship opportunity against The Miz.[8] One night later on Raw, both Cena and Miz derided The Rock's previous comments, with Cena producing a rap questioning The Rock's true commitment to WWE over his acting career, as he had done in an interview with UK newspaper The Sun three years previously which sparked the animosity.[9][10] Via satellite, The Rock responded to Cena's rap on the February 28 edition of Raw, citing that he started a movie career to help open the door for other wrestlers to go to Hollywood.[11] On the March 28 episode of Raw, The Rock and John Cena confronted each other face to face before WrestleMania, until The Miz came out, and he and Alex Riley attacked The Rock, who managed to fight back both men. After the assault, Cena hit Rock with an Attitude Adjustment to end the show.
Since 1993, the winner of the annual Royal Rumble match at the January event of the same name has won the opportunity to fight for a world championship at WrestleMania.[12] Alberto Del Rio won the match in 2011 and will wrestle Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship.[13][14] This led to a series of assaults from Del Rio to Edge in the following weeks. However, Edge was joined by the returning Christian, who aided Edge from Del Rio and his bodyguard Brodus Clay, and proceeded to be in Edge´s corner at WrestleMania.
Starting from the January 31 episode of Raw, ominous vignettes featuring a mysterious figure began airing on WWE programming promoting an upcoming event on "2 21 11".[15] On the February 21 edition of Raw, The Undertaker was revealed as the mysterious figure, who made his return after a four month absence. However, Undertaker's return was interrupted by a returning Triple H. The two men stared each other down and both peered at the WrestleMania marquee, teasing a possible challenge at WrestleMania XXVII.[16] The match was confirmed four days later on WWE's official website. This match marks the second time the two would face each other at a WrestleMania, the first being WrestleMania X-Seven ten years earlier.[17]
Before their WrestleMania match, both men had a face to face encounter on the March 28 episode of Raw, only to be interrupted by Shawn Michaels, who critictized Triple H for believing that he could defeat The Undertaker at the event, something that Michaels wasn´t able to do. After The Undertaker claimed that Michaels was history, Michaels attempted to superkick the Deadman, but he retailed with a chokeslam that was stopped by the Game. Triple H then asked Michaels why the Game is going to defeat the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Michaels, however, left the ring, unable to give Triple H an answer, believing that Triple H couldn't defeat the Deadman at the event.
In December 2010, Raw color commentator Jerry Lawler began a feud with fellow announcer Michael Cole when the anonymous Raw General Manager gave Lawler a WWE Championship match in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match against The Miz. As Lawler started to climb the ladder to retrieve the belt, Cole interfered and prevented Lawler from winning the match.[18] On the February 21 edition of Raw, Cole mocked Lawler for losing his rematch against The Miz at Elimination Chamber as well as his dreams of having a WrestleMania match, going as far as even mentioning Lawler's mother who died weeks earlier. Lawler responded by challenging Cole to a match at WrestleMania, which Cole denied before running through the crowd.[19][20] A week later, Cole accepted Lawler's challenge under two conditions – that his trainer Jack Swagger would be in his corner, and that he could choose a special guest referee – which Lawler accepted.[11] The following week, Cole announced that John "Bradshaw" Layfield would be the special guest referee. However, Steve Austin, who made his return that night, interfered in the contract signing by delivering a Stone Cold Stunner to JBL and signing the contract himself, officially becoming the special guest referee in the match. Cole continued to insult Lawler on the following weeks, even bringing Lawler's son Brian, who insulted Lawler, and calling him a bad father, before slapping him in the face and leaving. After that, Jim Ross, Lawler's best friend, confronted Michael Cole, and called him a "rat bastard", for what Jack Swagger attakced Ross, and later Lawler, who attempted to save Ross.
Another plot building up towards WrestleMania involved CM Punk and Randy Orton. Beginning the year, CM Punk became the leader of the Nexus, rebranding it as the "New Nexus".[21] In the following weeks, Punk attacked Orton, telling him that it was his revenge for Orton punting him at Unforgiven in 2008 while Punk was the World Heavyweight Champion, thus not allowing him to defend his title, which had to be vacated.[20][22] On February 28, the anonymous Raw General Manager announced a match between Punk and Orton. In addition, the General Manager stipulated that Orton will face one of the members of the New Nexus each week. If Orton lost, his opponent would be allowed to be in Punk's corner at WrestleMania; if he won, his opponent would be banned from attending the event.[11] Orton won all of his matches, so Husky Harris, Michael McGillicutty, David Otunga and Mason Ryan were banned from ringside. On the dying weeks before WrestleMania, Punk injured Orton's right leg with a wrench, after Punk used Orton's wife as bait to lure Orton to the parking lot.
Another feud heading into WrestleMania was between Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes. On the January 21 edition of SmackDown, Mysterio and Rhodes had a match in which Mysterio broke the nose of Cody Rhodes with the 619.[23] Rhodes, who underwent facial reconstruction surgery, later accused Mysterio of forcing him to miss the Royal Rumble match and the Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship, as well as ruining his 'dashing' gimmick. On the March 4 edition of SmackDown, Cody's father, Dusty Rhodes, came out to talk to Mysterio and asked Cody to apologize for his accusation, but it turned out to be a setup to allow Cody to attack and unmask Mysterio. The next week Rhodes challenged Rey to a match at WrestleMania, which was accepted by Mysterio. The following week, Rhodes attacked Rey again, during Mysterio's match against Drew McIntyre. However, Mysterio retailed the following week, attacking Rhodes, until Rhodes escaped the ring.
On the March 14 edition of Raw, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi appeared as a guest star and exchanged insults with Vickie Guerrero backstage. Later that night, Vickie defeated Trish Stratus with the help of Lay-Cool (Michelle McCool and Layla). After the match, Snooki, who observed the match at ringside, took down Lay-Cool after being provoked by McCool. A brawl ensued between Snooki & Stratus and Lay-Cool until Lay-Cool retreated from the ring. Vickie then proposed a six-person mixed tag team match at WrestleMania between Lay-Cool & her boyfriend, Dolph Ziggler, and Snooki, Stratus, & John Morrison which Snooki accepted. In the build up to the match, a vignette aired, showing Snookie and Stratus in a bar, where Stratus claimed that they were training for their WrestleMania match. On the vignette, Snooki fought a man, and later Snooki and Stratus fought Lay-Cool on the bar, after Lay-Cool started mocking Snooki and Stratus.
In an eight-man tag team match, The Corre (Wade Barrett, Ezekiel Jackson, Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater) was scripted to wrestle Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston. The Corre had been going after Big Show on Smackdown, but Big Show and Kane joined forces to destroy the Corre on Raw two weeks before WrestleMania. Later, Kane and Big Show helped Vladimir Kozlov and Santino Marella fend off an attack by the Corre. On April 2, after a WrestleMania Axxess match between Kozlov and Tyler Reks, The Corre attacked Kozlov, leaving his shoulder injured. Kofi Kingston, who recently lost the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Barrett, was chosen as Kozlov's replacement.

In September 2009, it was reported that the city of Atlanta was seeking to host WrestleMania XXVII at the Georgia Dome.[24] A press conference was held on February 1, 2010 at the Georgia Dome to formally announce the event for Atlanta.[1] According to WWE's senior vice president of special events, John Saboor, Atlanta was ultimately chosen for, among other reasons, "their track record of success with large events, rich in its tradition with the WWE, great infrastructure."[25] The event marked the first time WrestleMania has been held in the state of Georgia.[1]
Atlanta's main rival bid came from the city of Miami, Florida who proposed to host the event at Sun Life Stadium along with WrestleMania Axxess at the Miami Beach Convention Center and the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony at the American Airlines Arena.[25][26] Miami would eventually become the host for WrestleMania XXVIII.[27]
Along with WrestleMania XXVII, a series of events grouped as "WrestleMania Week" was held in the week preceding the event including WrestleMania's annual WrestleMania Axxess fan convention, the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, the fourth annual WrestleMania Art exhibition and auction, and a Celebrity Pro-Am Golf tournament. WrestleMania Axxess was held at the Georgia World Congress Center, while the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony took place at the Philips Arena.[28][29] It was the first pay-per-view event under WWE's promotional rights deal with Kmart. Under the deal, Kmart will be the official sponsor for all of WWE's live events in the United States for the rest of 2011.[30] As another part of the promotion for the event, WWE Magazine released a "Guide to WrestleMania XXVII" app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, featuring information about the upcoming event as well as trivia from past events.[31]
"Written in the Stars" by Tinie Tempah was the theme song for the event.[32] "Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)" by Shinedown served as the secondary theme song, while R&B singer Keri Hilson performed "America the Beautiful" at the start of the show.[33] Celebrities and former wrestlers that appeared in WrestleMania XXVII segments include Snoop Dogg, Pee Wee Herman, Gene Okerlund, Mae Young and Roddy Piper.
Pre-show
Before the event aired, two dark matches took place. In the first match Sheamus defended his WWE United States Championship against Daniel Bryan in a lumberjack match. During the match, a brawl broke out between the lumberjacks outside the ring, resulting in the match ending in a no contest. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long then called for a battle royal to take place. The Great Khali won the match after last eliminating Sheamus.[34]
As the show went live on pay-per-view, singer Keri Hilson performed "America the Beautiful". Soon after, The Rock, the guest host, walked to the ring and cut a promo, mocking John Cena as well as firing up the crowd for WrestleMania.
[edit]Preliminary matches
The first televised match was for the World Heavyweight Championship. This match saw Edge defending his title against 2011 Royal Rumble winner Alberto Del Rio. Christian came out to watch the match ringside, as well as Brodus Clay and Ricardo Rodriguez. In the early part of the match, Del Rio focused on Edge’s injured arm and Christian warded off Clay and Ricardo. After some back and forth action, the ending came when Edge and Del Rio locked in their signature maneuvers. Edge locked in the Edgeucator while Del Rio locked in the Cross Armbreaker. When both men got up, Edge hit the Spear for the win. After the match, Edge and Christian destroyed Del Rio’s car. This would end up being Edge's last match, as he announced his retirement a week later on Raw due to a legitimate neck injury.
The next match featured “Undashing” Cody Rhodes and Rey Mysterio, who came out dressed as Captain America. Rhodes dominated most of the match, however, Mysterio managed to retail later on. Towards the end of the match, Rey managed to get Rhodes’ facial mask off and hit Cody with some headbutts. Rhodes countered by removing Mysterio’s knee brace. When Rey went for a dive, Rhodes knocked out Mysterio with the knee brace. This allowed Rhodes to hit the Cross Rhodes for the win.
Next was the Eight Man Tag Team match between a team consisting of Kane, Big Show, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston and another team consisting of The Corre (Wade Barrett, Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel). In a match that lasted two short minutes, the end came when Slater got hit with the Cobra by Santino and a right hook from Big Show. Big Show then pinned Slater for the win.
The next match featured Randy Orton facing off against CM Punk. Punk spent most of the match focusing on Orton’s injured knee, until Orton made a comeback later on the match. Orton then went for the punt to the skull, but his injured knee stopped him. Punk signaled for the GTS, but Orton went for a RKO. Punk dodged and went to the top rope. He went for a crossbody, but Orton hit the RKO for the win.
Main event matches
Following Orton vs. Punk was the first main event between two commentators. Booker T and Jim Ross came out to call this match, which featured Michael Cole accompanied by Jack Swagger against Jerry “The King” Lawler, with the special guest referee being Stone Cold Steve Austin. This match started off with Lawler trying to get Cole out of his cole mine, and after some time, he did so and started pounding on him. Cole managed to counter and had the upper hand on Lawler for most of the match. Swagger tried to help Cole by throwing in the towel when Lawler began to take control but was denied and then got a Stone Cold Stunner. Lawler then forced Cole to tap out with the ankle lock while Stone Cold mocked him. After the match, Stone Cold shared a beer with Lawler and stunned Booker T, who came out to celebrate with Lawler. After Lawler had seemingly won, the anonymous Raw GM reversed the decision in an email read by Josh Mathews because Stone Cold was a biased referee, making Cole the winner by disqualification. Stone Cold then proceeded to stun Mathews as well in retribution. Lawler then replaced Mathews and Booker T as the color commentator for the rest of the night, with Jim Ross doing the play-by-play.
The next main event was a No Holds Barred match between two icons in the WWE: The Undertaker and Triple H. Triple H first came out to For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica wearing a mask and suit, then removed it for his normal entrance theme. The beginning of this match started off with Taker and Triple H going at it outside of the ring, destroying Michael Cole’s "cole mine" in the process. Triple H first gave a spinebuster to Undertaker through the Spanish announce table. This match went back and forth, with Undertaker unable to keep Triple H down after a Chokeslam, Last Ride, and a Tombstone Piledriver. After that, Triple H answered back with three Pedigrees and numerous steel chair shots but still couldn't get a pinfall. Triple H seemingly had the match won when he executed Undertaker’s Tombstone Piledriver, but Undertaker once again kicked out. Triple H then grabbed a sledgehammer, but Undertaker locked the Hell’s Gate on Triple H. He tried to fight out of it, but Triple H tapped out. The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak thus continued to 19-0. After the match, the Undertaker had to be helped to the locker room by WWE staff after he collapsed outside the ring and could not walk under his own power.
The next match was a six person mixed tag team match. One team featured John Morrison, Trish Stratus, and Nicole Polizzi competing against a team consisting of Dolph Ziggler and LayCool (Michelle McCool & Layla). This match also lasted a few short minutes, with the ending coming when Morrison hit Ziggler with a Starship Pain on the outside of the ring, while Snooki hit a cartwheel splash on McCool to get the win for her team.
The last match was for the WWE Championship. It featured John Cena facing off against current champion The Miz (accompanied by Alex Riley). The first highlight of the match occurred when Cena hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle on The Miz. Cena then went for the Attitude Adjustment, but Miz countered with a DDT. There was a lot of back and forth action until The Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale. That didn’t keep Cena down as he managed to hit the Attitude Adjustment; however, that didn’t keep Miz down either. Both men fought outside of the ring, but knocked each other out in the process. The match ended in a double countout, meaning The Miz would retain his title. The Rock came out to intervene, but the Raw GM made an announcement. The Rock went to read it, but then disregarded it. He called for a restart to the match with a no disqualification, no countout, no time limit stipulation. The match restarted and, with Cena dragging Miz back inside the ring and attempting to execute an Attitude Adjustment, wasn't successful. In retaliation for the Attitude Adjustment that Cena gave him on the Raw episode prior to WrestleMania, The Rock stalked Cena from behind and hit a Rock Bottom on him. Taking advantage, The Miz then covered a fallen Cena for the win. After the match, The Rock had a staredown with Miz until Rock commenced an attack on him, ending the ambush with his signature spinebuster and his finisher, The People’s Elbow. WrestleMania XXVII went off air with The Rock posing on top of the turnbuckles for the fans.
Aftermath
The following night on Raw, John Cena and The Rock agreed to face each other in a match at WrestleMania XXVIII, marking the first time a match had been announced almost a year in advance for any WrestleMania. Later on Cena won the WWE title in a steel cage triple threat match against The Miz and John Morrison at Extreme Rules. The RAW after Extreme Rules Cena defended the WWE title against The Miz in a singles match after being restarted due to the referee noticing interference from Alex Riley after Miz winning. Later in a backstage segment Cena "congratulated" The Rock on his birthday, telling him to bring it on for Wrestlemania while showing off the WWE title, implying that their match at Wrestlemania 28 will be for the WWE title, continuing on with their feud.
On the April 11 Raw, Edge announced his legitimate retirement from the WWE, due to injury and orders by his doctor, making his last match for the company against Del Rio at WrestleMania. Edge vacated the World Heavyweight Championship on the April 15 edition of SmackDown, therefore retiring as world champion. Christian would win the title at Extreme Rules in a ladder match against Del Rio, only to lose it at the hands of Randy Orton, on the May 6 episode of SmackDown.
Following their loss at WrestleMania (not to mention failing to regain the WWE Divas Championship), tension rose in LayCool. After two weeks of couples therapy, a bitter Michelle McCool turned on Layla, dissolving their team. Layla and McCool would face off in a match at the second annual Extreme Rules pay-per-view with no countouts, no disqualifications, and the loser has to leave WWE. Layla went on to win the match, resulting in McCool's subsequent - and legitimate - departure from WWE.
As a consequence of using a chair shot to the head, Triple H and The Undertaker were legitimately fined by the WWE for violating the company's "Concussion policy" at the event.[35]
Reception
WrestleMania, despite being a tremendous financial success, received mixed reviews from critics. The Sun in a mixed review said The Rock as host "never quite clicked" and that the opening segment involving The Rock was "excessive and generic". However, they called the World Heavyweight Championship match "pretty good", the Orton-Punk match "a little gem" with "clinical timing and execution", and the WWE Championship match "odd" and that the match itself "never really got going". They praised the Undertaker-Triple H match, calling it "match of the night" and saying "the emotion and drama in the match was incredible". Overall, they award the event a 8 out of 10.[36] Canadian Online Explorer's professional wrestling section gave the entire event 8.5 out of 10, up from the last year's rating. The World Heavyweight Championship match received an 8 out of 10, the Undertaker-Triple H match received a 10 out of 10, and the WWE Championship match received an 8 out of 10.[37]
